Thirty years ago, when Ted picked up our first camera to document his parents’ 50th wedding anniversary party, I became hooked on photography. We started our learning journey with a weeklong course at Fern Howe in Braithwaite, Cumbria, sharing the one camera we had between us. We decided to take our photography further and enrolled on a six year ‘Intensive Black and White’ course at Missenden Abbey Adult Learning Centre, which we loved and where our photography and our styles developed.
Ted and I share a love of nature and the beauty around us. I’m as captivated by quiet scenes on beaches and at local woodlands as I am by the grand vistas of northern England, Scotland and Scandinavia. I love experimenting with colour and black and white, and my work is often a little ethereal. Ted and I support The National Trust, English Heritage and RSPB and in anything we do, we ensure that we don’t adversely affect the environment.
This piece is constructed on canvas using Free-hand Machine embroidery and paint. The tree is the focus and is produced through intense stitch. The stitching becomes looser as it moves away from the tree and it becomes embedded in paint. The tree remains intense as the focus of a journey up the hill the other elements that are passed are less memorable and thus less intense.

One of a kind
“The Journey or The Destination” has been handwoven, the imagery is conveyed through disperse dye on a synthetic warp. Freehand machine embroidery and hand embroidery have also been used to add further texture and detail. The inspiration for this piece has come from the fact that when walking in the countryside we often have an intended destination. However, in many cases although we aspire to reach a certain point it is actually the Journey that can be most valuable.

“Rust and Cyanotype” is a handwoven piece that has been created by dying a cotton warp yarn with rust and cyanotype on a cotton warp. This piece has been inspired by the distinct difference of experiencing the earth and the atmosphere on a particular walk on the edge of Luton.

In 'Mud Weave' the weft is coated with mud from the locality. The colour of the final cloth was generated from the location. The weft was woven in with decreasing amounts of mud as the weft traversed the warp and journeyed up into the lighter more open weave towards the top of this piece.

This handwoven textile hanging is inspired by the transient state of a tree viewed through the fog. For a time, the way we are able to experience the tree is through the fog, blurred and surrounded. The warp has been hand painted prior to being woven. Once the weft threads are introduced the strong image of the tree becomes pixilated and is contained within the cloth. 2018

‘Waterfall’ is based on the experience of walking up and alongside a waterfall on the way to Easedale Tarn in the Lake District. I have used Photoshop to explored the contrast of the shapes and patterns created by the water. I was struck on this occasion by the idea that from a distance the waterfall looks like a stationary white mark on the landscape. It is only by moving up it and walking close by it, that you can experience it.

‘Stitched Land’ is created using freehand machine embroidery and stitch. It references a walk in Wales. When walking in the countryside there are often points that remain more intense in our memory, points to rest and take in the view. Other areas are less significant and yet are a vital part of the phenomenology of the walk.
